The Bowdoinham Department of Community and Economic Development announced today that the town has been working with a group of local farmers and residents on bringing back a farmers’ market to Bowdoinham. The market will be located at the Merrymeeting Grange at 27 Main Street in the heart of the village. The first day of the market will be June 20 and it will continue through November 1. The hours of the market will be Fridays 3 pm - 7 pm and Saturdays 8 am - 12 noon.
The market will sell a large range fresh local produce, food and farm products. This project will allow many of the new and existing farmers in the town of Bowdoinham and surrounding areas to have access directly to the local customers. In addition to operating the in the traditional manner of the farmer representing themselves at the grange, the market will allow the farmers to form a cooperative to share an employee to sell for multiple farmers. The cooperative option will allow the farmers to attend larger markets or to spend more time farming rather than having to do retail sales themselves.
“I see this project as a win-win for many parties” states Tony Cox, director of the Bowdoinham Department of Community and Economic Development, “The Merrymeeting Grange is in need of some money to address maintenance issues on their historic Main Street building, the farmers need a retail outlet closer to their fields, consumers want access to fresh food closer to their homes, and the additional sustainable economic activity fits nicely into our future growth goals for the Town of Bowdoinham”
