How to Estimate the Cost of your New Vehicle Registration – Basic Instructions:
Excise Tax:
Excise tax is figured by obtaining the “MSRP” (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) when the vehicle was new.
For a New Vehicle the dealer will provide you with the Monroney Label (window sticker). The first year mil rate is .024. Use the “bottom line price” and deduct the “delivery or destination charges”. The balance multiplied by .024 equals the first year excise tax amount.
Example: 2007 Vehicle
Bottom line sticker price $26,165.00
Delivery charge - 750.00
Total Net Price $25,415.00
Multiply by 1sr year mil rate x .024
First Year Excise Tax = $609.96
For a Used Vehicle the MSRP can be obtained from the previous owner’s registration, the original window sticker, or the town office staff will obtain it from the VIN number of the vehicle. The excise tax equals MSRP multiplied by the corresponding mil rate:
If the vehicle is one year old, the MSRP is multiplied by .024
If the vehicle is two years old, the MSRP is multiplied by .0175
If the vehicle is three years old, the MSRP is multiplied by .0135
If the vehicle is four years old, the MSRP is multiplied by .010
If the vehicle is five years old, the MSRP is multiplied by .0065
If the vehicle is six years old or older, the MSRP is multiplied by .004
