In 2014, Bowdoinham was the first municipality in northern New England to be accepted as a member of the World Health Organization-Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities

Bowdoinham was one of two communities in the United States and one of 13 municipalities in the world asked to help the World Health Organization develop a set of indicators that communities can use to measure progress toward making their communities more age-friendly.

In 2015, Bowdoinham was accepted as a member of the AARP-Network of Age-Friendly Communities. 

The Advisory Committee on Aging (ACOA) advises the Bowdoinham Select Board about ways to make the community more aging friendly and oversees the age-friendly activities in the community.

On June 15, 2017, ACOA celebrated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with breakfast, followed by a skit and a panel of experts. Stories from Around the Quilt was written and performed by the Bowdoinham Age-Friendly players:

Age-Frienldy Bowdoinham sponsors:

  • Activities, such as the Collage Workshop offered by Gracia Woodward, with the help of Izzy Drehobel, a senior at Mt. Ararat who completed her Capstone Project with us. To see a video summary of the workshop (produced by izzy), go to: https://youtu.be/qzvV1NIZRcU

  • Annual wellness fair

  • Coffee Cafe meets every Thursday from 10AM to 1PM in the Graduate Room on the second floor of the Coombs Municipal Building and, on the third Thursday of the month (for the Village Seniors luncheon) in the basement of the Second Baptist Church.

  • The golf club meets each Thursday at 10:00 (weather permitting)

  • Games--such as cribbage and Bridge

  • Trips to fun and/or educational destinations and cultural events

  • Recreational opportunities through the Bowdoinham Outdoors e-group. Join your friends and neighbors in Bowdoinham to snow shoe in the winter and to hike and kayak ithe rest of the year. 

  • Volunteer Opportunities: Age-Friendly Bowdoinham is always looking for people who want to share their time and talents with others.

  • Wellness Programming: Classes such as Exercise Plus, gentle yoga,  line dancing, Matter of Balance, and tai chi that promote optimal aging. 

  • Monthly activity and resource guide. The monthly calendar of activities and resources sponosred by the Advisory Committee on Aging is available online (see the Actitivies and Resources link above). Copies are aslo available in the following locations: town office, Bowdoinham Public Library, and Town Landing. 

Age-Friendly Bowdoinham challenges residents who have reached the milestone of their 60th birthday to energize their lives by joining in any of our activities or events.
