Change: Not just for the Candidates
By Jill Hooper
President, Friends of the Library
This fall, the buzz word seems to be change, and it’s no different for the Bowdoinham Public Library.
September was a big transition month for the Library. In August, Librarian Beth French, resigned after accepted a full time position as the Assistant Town Clerk in Lisbon. The board received many applications, some from as far away as Washington and Tennessee. After many interviews and much discussion, the interview committee chose Bowdoinham resident Kate Cutko. Cutko has her Masters of Social Work, and her credentials include being a Bowdoinham Guild of Artists member, Merrymeeting Art Center teacher, and the Program Director for the very successful 2008 Library Summer Reading Program. She took over as Librarian on September 2.
November has been declared Overdue Amnesty Month. Bring back overdue books free of charge and free of guilt! The Library will be open for extended hours on Election Day, Nov. 4th. Stop by between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to say hello to our new librarian, and explore our ever increasing collection.
For our younger readers - Story time began in September with preschoolers enjoying stories by Maine authors, and activities in conjunction with those stories. Story time is on Tuesday mornings at 10. We also have some Junior Librarians: volunteers who are interested in shelving, alphabetizing and organizing books, as well as some other light duties. If you are interested, and in grade 4 or above, please stop by the Library and speak with Kate. On November 14th there will a parent-child book discussion of “Love That Dog” by Sharon Creech from 6:30-8pm.
Do you love to read but can’t make it into the Library? We deliver! You can access the card catalogue on the Library website and then call in for availability and delivery set up. If you don’t have internet access, please feel free to call the Library and Kate will work with you. Deliveries are currently on Saturday, but others can be added as needed.
Thanks to those of who donated books, please keep them coming! Special thanks to Rose Brawn who donated many mysteries and helped fill out the Library’s James Patterson collection. The Annual Fall Book Sale is November 8 at the Coombs Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be 2 rooms full of paperback and hardcover books – fiction, non-fiction and children’s books. If you are available to help out at the sale, please let us know.
Poinsettia Sale – new this year, we will be taking Poinsettia orders for pick up on December 5 and 6 at the Library. Two sizes of plants will be available and in three colors: red, pink and white. Single stem plants (6.5” pot, 5-7 bracts) are $12 and double stem plants (7” pot, 10-14 bracts) are $18. Orders will be taken at the Library until Nov 8.
The Library will be closed for Veteran’s Day Nov. 11 and on Book Sale Day Nov. 8. Sorry for any inconvenience.

The library catalog is now online, or at least part of it is done and may be viewed from the library webpage. Go to http://www.bowdoinham.lib.me.us and you can access the catalog from there. No password is necessary, just type in Bowdoinham for the library name. The online catalog contains records for all the adult non-fiction, all the new adult and juvenile fiction since January 2008. You can search for books by title, author, and subject. Try it out and see what good books are at the library.
While at the library webpage take a look at the “new books” page. New books are added to the library collection every month. If you have ever been to “Norlands” in Livermore you will want to read Remarkable Americans: The Washburn Family. Other recent additions are Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth, Three Girls and Their Brother by Theresa Rebeck, and the always popular Alexander McCall Smith’s latest The Miracle at Speedy Motors.
The summer reading program will begin as soon as school gets out. Call the library for further details. The program is for pre-schoolers and grade school children. Last year we had lots of fun with mysteries and finding “Sherlock”. Let’s see what fun we can have this summer!
