The Midcoast Economic Development District is one of six economic development districts in Maine. Each District, or EDD, is tasked with coordinating with local, state and federal agencies to deliver effective economic and community development services to its communities.

The mission of the Economic Development District is to develop and deliver a Comprehensive Economic Develoment Strategy (CEDS), which incorporates the economic, community, and workforce development, education, transportation, and environmental efforts and initiatives of the MIdcoast region. To partner with communities, businesses, non-profits, and other regional development organizations to support the delivery of those economic and community development programs and services that will further the goals and objectives in the CEDS.

The federal Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration is the supporting Agency of the EDD and requires a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for each District. The CEDS is a five year planning and development document that tracks the activities, projects and goals and objectives of the region and by virtue of their being included in the document, makes them eligible for EDA funding. Updated annually, the CEDS is the key program of an economic development district and plays an integral role in the economy of the region but also may include the community, energy, transportation, education, workforce and environmental progams and policies of the region as well.
