Ice & Smelt Festival - Opening of Matt Barter’s Exhibit, “Winter River Life”

Merrymeeting Arts Center's opening of Matt Barter’s exhibit, “Winter River Life”, will take place in the gallery following the Smelt Puppet Show.
A resident of Brunswick, Maine, Matt paints and sculpts in the upstairs studio of the carriage house he and his wife reclaimed and updated. The downstairs is a gallery where he exhibits new works. As a teenager, Matt studied with his father, learning the mechanics of oil painting. He also worked with his father on various commercial fishing boats, lobstering, mussel harvesting, and the like, which shaped his style and focus on the working harbors of Maine. His work boldly and beautifully captures the essence, heart and soul of Maine’s fishing industry, including our local tradition of smelt fishing on the Cathance River.
The exhibit will run through February 29, 2020, during regular gallery hours, on Saturdays from 10-1.
