Ice & Smelt Festival

We are very excited to bring you The Ice & Smelt Festival this year! This year Ice & Smelt is going to be a week-long Festival, February 15th-20th. We have events that are going to be located throughout town, with the goal of getting you and your family outside for a safe winter festival!

We are excited to offer programs sponsored by the Merrymeeting Arts Center, Bowdoinham Public Library, and the Recreation Department!

Snow Globe workshops by Sally Kent on Tuesday and Wednesday at 10:30 and 12:30 and on Saturday 10:30, 12:30 and 2:30. The workshop is free and limited to four participants each; masks and distancing required.  To register email:

MAC Mask Show: Come see Masks: Live, Love, Laugh at the Merrymeeting Arts Center.  While 2020 may be behind us, the need to wear masks is still present in our day to day lives. Something once reserved for Halloween has become part of our daily wardrobe. What was once reserved for doctors in surgery is now street attire. Theatrical, historic, and tribal - all now routine, common.  View the very creative and diverse styles of the 3 guest artists - Nanette Giacoma's use of masks cast from people’s faces, decorated, and embellished in intricate detail. Bridget McAlonan's whimsical and skilled repurposing of discarded materials. And Sophia Shannon's theatrical and expressive style.

If you did not have a chance to check out this clever and enlightened show, do not miss this opportunity. Special hours during Ice & Smelt week are 10-1, Tuesday & Saturday.
Sidewalk Stories: A Scavenger Hunt through Time! Follow clues on a walking tour of Bowdoinham to reveal secrets of town lore and history. Accessible by sidewalk and fun for all ages. Download the Scavenger Hunt below!

The Recreation Department is offering ice skating at our skating rink at the Rec Fields, a sledding hill at the Rec Field, photo scavenger hunts at both the Rec Fields and Cathance River Trails where your family will be given a list of objects to find and take photos of, there will be ice skates and cross-country ski rentals available at the Town Office, and we are encouraging our residents to get out and cross-country ski and snowshoe on the trails throughout town! The Bowdoinham Library is happy to offer two StoryWalks in two separate locations during the Ice & Smelt Festival week. (A StoryWalk is a picture book presented page by page along a walking trail, so a reader walks along and reads the story as they go.) Along the recreation fields behind the elementary school, you can read “There was a Cold Lady who Swallowed Some Snow” by Lucille Colandro. Over on Cathance River Trails you can read “Over and Under the Snow” by Kate Messner. Dress warmly, wear proper boots and enjoy these StoryWalks with “kids” of all ages.
